How to Onboard High-Risk Merchants to Your Marketplace
Most marketplaces don’t get burned by high-risk sellers. They get burned by poor onboarding design. See how to approve sellers without losing control.
How do you turn liquidity into growth? For Courtyard.io, the answer was clear: give sellers instant access to their funds and watch growth happen.

Client: Courtyard.io — peer-to-peer marketplace for graded physical card collectibles
Industry: Marketplaces & tokenized collectibles
Goal: Increase seller participation, liquidity, and inventory supply
Coinflow’s Impact: Instant seller withdrawals, global payout coverage, fraud & chargeback indemnification
Result: Achieved +1,350% growth in active sellers, doubled average withdrawal size and tripled monthly seller withdrawals.

Courtyard.io is a first-of-its-kind marketplace and tokenization platform enabling collectors to seamlessly buy, sell, and trade graded physical cards.
As demand across Pokémon, sports cards, and collectibles surged, Courtyard.io identified a critical truth: marketplace growth was constrained by seller liquidity, not buyer demand.
To unlock supply-side growth, Courtyard.io partnered with Coinflow in Q2 2024 to modernize its global payment infrastructure with buyer payments and seller withdrawals.
Unlike traditional retailers, marketplaces can’t manufacture inventory on demand. Growth depends on sellers’ ability to list, sell, and restock inventory quickly.
From a payments standpoint, Courtyard.io evaluated two levers:
Fees across providers were largely commoditized. Speed was the only meaningful differentiator.

“If sellers can’t access their funds quickly, they can’t restock—and the marketplace stalls.” — Nicolas le Jeune, Founder & CEO at Courtyard.io
Many sellers—especially smaller operators—lacked access to credit lines. Waiting days for payouts limited their ability to stay active and competitive.
Courtyard.io turned to Coinflow to fundamentally improve payment reconciliation and to transform how sellers accessed liquidity.
Coinflow’s stablecoin-powered infrastructure enabled true instant settlement—allowing sellers to move funds off-platform at the moment of sale, without introducing fraud or chargeback risk.

After Courtyard.io deployed Coinflow’s payments technology stack in quarter 2 of 2024, Courtyard.io’s global seller network had three withdrawal payment speed options: standard (settled in 2-3 business days), same-day, and instant.
What followed—visualized by the graph below—demonstrates sellers’ strong appetite and desire for instant withdrawal settlement.
Between quarter 2 and quarter 4 of 2024, the percentage of sellers selecting standard withdrawal settlement dropped from 33 percent to 10.7 percent. Conversely, the percentage of sellers electing for instant withdrawal settlement jumped from 60 percent to 84.1 percent.

Our product research indicates that both psychological and operational factors contribute to marketplace sellers’ strong preference for instant withdrawal settlement. First, it promotes trust and safety with the platform, as sale proceeds are immediately fungible and not ‘locked’ to a closed-loop ecosystem. Second, small retail sellers may not have credit lines to replenish inventories. With funds from sales accessible off-platform right away, sellers can quickly put their revenue to work however and wherever they see fit.
Instant settlement directly translated into more active sellers and more inventory.
Beyond seller count, engagement deepened:
As instant settlement usage increased, so did seller confidence, restocking speed, and sales velocity.
Instant liquidity unlocked a powerful growth loop:
All without increased risk. Courtyard.io reduced its chargeback rate from 1.42% → .28% from Q2 to Q3 2024.

“Instant settlement didn’t just improve payouts—it unlocked a new phase of marketplace growth.” — Joe Petrich, Head of Engineering at Courtyard.io
